Christmas tree decoration – Malanka Christmas star, or Generous Evening.
This souvenir is entirely handmade by Ternopil craftsmen: sewn from natural fabric, stuffed with polyester wadding, soaked in an aromatic coffee mixture, and painted in a winter holiday theme.
Generous Evening, or Malanka, or Vasyl's Evening, falls on December 31. Until recently, we celebrated it on January 13, but with the transition to the Neo-Julian calendar, this date has changed. Once upon a time, winter holidays corresponded to today's dates, but for many decades we celebrated them two weeks later. Because of this, we had such a unique phenomenon as the celebration of the Old New Year, which fell on January 14. Now these dates have been aligned, and the Old New Year is no longer old.
On Malanka, a festive dinner is prepared, which is called Generous, because the dishes are not lean: there is kutia, homemade sausages, and ham. Young people carol all night long and lead a young man dressed up as Malanka. In general, the traditions of the Ukrainian Generous Evening are very colorful and distinctive, so we recommend not only hanging a toy on the Christmas tree, but also learning more about caroling.
