Icon “St. George the Dragon Slayer” with silver plating, gilding, and enamel
St. George the Dragon Slayer is one of the most important saints in Christianity. George was first and foremost a Christian martyr who was later added to the list of saints. He was a Roman soldier from Cappadocia who lived around 256 (285) – 303 during the reign of Emperor Diocletian.
He lost all his status and was executed during the persecution of Christians. Since the Middle Ages, he has been the standard of a knight, a dragon slayer. In paintings, he is most often depicted as a horseman piercing a snake with his spear. He is honored as the patron saint of warriors and soldiers. He was the patron saint of emperors and rulers of various countries, including Kyivan Rus.
The icon presented here also depicts the canonical Saint George: on horseback, with a spear, killing a snake. This is not just an image of a saint, but a true work of art, handmade, precious both for its craftsmanship and the depth of faith.
The copper base is voluminous, textured, and detailed. Jewelers covered it with silver, gold, and blackening, painted it with deep-colored jewelry enamels, and decorated it with bright blue inlays. A classic frame made of natural wood complements the exquisite image.
This icon will become a family heirloom and protect the family from generation to generation.
